Farewell, Brave Stooge

Filed under: Music — rmangum @ 4:32 am

Former Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton is dead. Frankly, I’m surprised it didn’t happen long ago, given what I’ve read about the band in Legs McNeil’s gossipy (and too NY-centered, if you ask me) punk-bio Please Kill Me. (If I remember aright, Ron actually provides the book’s most poignant anecdote, when he meets one of the real Stooges, Curly I think, in a L.A. rest home whilst on the outs with Iggy and the rest of the band.) It just reminds me what a dearth of really exciting and raw rock and roll bands there are around.

Here’s the obligatory YouTube video, with great color commentary. (“There goes Iggy into the crowd. We’ve lost audio . . . the kids seem to love it . . . that’s peanut butter!”)
