germanyWho are the Monks?

They were American GI’s stationed in Germany in the mid-sixties, with nothing better to do but start a rock band. They actually dressed like monks. They aimed to be the “anti-Beatles”. They used feedback and a Wah-Wah pedal before Hendrix, who according to Monk lore got the idea from them when he saw them in Germany. They released one molten shocker of an album called Black Monk Time that you will either hate or become obsessed with, as I have. Think the Velvet Underground’s White Light/White Heat with yodeling, syncopated banjo accompaniment, an even faster, more economical beat, and you’ll still not quite be there. But best to hear and see for yourself.

The latest news is that not only is Black Monk Time being re-released, but a compilation of their unreleased earlier work is forthcoming. And a documentary about them is already out.

They have been described as being “ahead of their time”, but the fact is that they were and have always existed only in their own time- Monk Time!
